What is Shamanism?

About Shamanism

Shamanism is thought to be the oldest known spiritual practice, from over 100 000 years ago, as well as being a healing tradition and way of life. It is based on animism, the belief that everything is living and has a spirit.

Practiced all over the world dating back to the ancient native cultures of South America, India, Native America, and Siberia, it was soon evident the phenomenon called Shamanism was being practiced in virtually every culture and region.  For this reason there are many different Shamanic practices which are tailored to both the environment and culture.

Shamanism is believed to be the key to our being, and its continued practice ensures our survival as the Shaman links to higher planes of existence, communing with the spirit world to heal, interact with the web of life and uplift consciousness.

“Shaman” comes from the Siberian Tungus tribe, meaning “spiritual healer,” or, “one who sees in the dark,” and throughout history there was generally a Shaman found in every community.

Their access to the spirit realm served to extract and restore energetic pathways, recover soul parts and discover the spiritual aspects of illness.  The lack of dogmas, sacred texts and single leadership means Shamanism is not viewed as a religion.

The role of the Shaman is to guide a person back to their true nature, to access their inner power, and on a broader scale to help maintain and demonstrate the harmonious balance of nature, animal and man.

Not only are they are concerned about the health and well-being of their community, they also care for welfare of the plant and animal kingdoms, and the environment.

How to become a Modern Day Shaman

There are many different ways to become a Shaman. Some Shamans are initiated or have a ‘calling’, while others are born into shamanism or venture on a solitary, spiritual journey to contact spirit guides and learn the mystic ways of a Shaman.

The prophecies of the Shamans of the Andes of the Americas, of North America speak of this time as the end of an era for humanity and the birth of a new human which can be you and me – the Modern Day Shaman.

To do this we need to truly evolve, and learning the way of the Modern Day Shaman we become the alchemist’s vessels where transmutation and transformation can occur.

Why become a Modern Day Shaman?

In shamanism the physical symptoms experienced in the body are seen as "the effects" and result of disharmony (loss of power), fear or soul loss which cause an imbalance within the person. For true healing to take place, the underlying cause must be addressed, requiring the healing of the spirit and a return to wholeness, which must come from within.

The helping spirits of the shaman are able to give insight and facilitate the required treatment for healing, and to that they must go on a shamanic journey to retrieve this energy and information.

Benefits to becoming a Modern Day Shaman:

  • A way for deeper inner connection

  • A path towards accessing your greater self

Karrin Pattie

Her curiosity and inquiring mind led to her ask many questions about the body and its innate healing systems as well as wanting to understand universal energy and quantum physics. She went on to  receive a Certificate of Mastery, qualifying as a Reiki and Seichim Master in 2009.

As her studies deepened she broadened her skills to encompass that of Connective Healing and Quantum Healing.  The highlight of her quest on how to heal the body and activate its own healing systems was learning the art of Kiatsu (putting Ki into the body to stimulate its own natural healing abilities) by Sensei Michael Williams, the then World Instructor for Aikido. Shamanic healer, trained under Scott Silverton in Kauai, Hawaii. She then furthered her Shamanic studies under Alberto Vilvoldo of the Four Winds Society and Sandra Ingam,
